The first half of each episode follows Milton Friedman as he discusses free market issues in locations around the world the second half is devoted to debates between Friedman and other scholars and experts. Friedman accepts capitalism as the best political system available, as it offers the highest degree of individual freedom. The series argues that free market principles are best for society as a whole, whether in commerce, trade, or education. It aired on PBS beginning in January 1980 and in the same year was developed into a book, Free to Choose: A Personal Statement. Friedman explains how markets and voluntary exchange organize activity and enable people to improve their lives. These both helped to popularize free-market thinking and made Friedman a household name. Capitalism and Freedom also inspired Friedman’s highly successful book and television series Free to Choose (1980).
